Having spent Canada Day windbound in a swamp low on food supplies,Mike Ranta takes advantage of a rare calm spell on Cedar Lake, Manitoba, and paddles under the aurora borealis to account for lost time. In 2014, Mike Ranta became the first person in history to canoe from the Pacific to Atlantic ocean in a single season, alone, by canoe. Clad in a Métis sash, slaving under his birch bark hat and alongside his canine, Spitzii, the jovial masochist endured 214 days and roughly 8,000 kilometres to achieve the unprecedented goal. In 2016, Ranta found a faster route and bested his own record by fourteen days. Born and raised in Atikokan, Ontario, the forty-five year old was inspired by the tales of voyageurs who fuelled the North American fur trade for nearly 300 years with their unbridled resilience. In 2017, the self proclaimed ‘modern voyageur’, departed Bella Coola, British Columbia, to attempt one final coast-to-coast trip. Born and raised in Atikokan, Ontario, the forty-five year old was inspired by the tales of voyageurs who fuelled the North American fur trade for nearly 300 years with their unbridled resilience. In 2017, the self proclaimed ‘modern voyageur’, departed Bella Coola, British Columbia, to attempt one final coast-to-coast trip. With months lost to harrowing weather and pitiless wind, after 187 days of obsessed desire, Ranta would quit on Lake Superior, Ontario, at the base of a gale force storm.
